5K Classic - Saturday, January 9, 2010

The Mt. Washington Valley Ski Touring Foundation provides groomed trails for a number of Nordic races throughout the season.

The New Hampshire Series held by the NH Nordic Coaches Association was a 5K classic race for over 600 boys and girls from middle and senior high schools around the state of New Hampshire held on Saturday, January 9th.

The day was perfect with sunny blue skies, temps in the teens and no wind. Grooming of a modified race course took place for several days prior to the event to provide tracks on a 5 - 10" base. Racers lined up in the tracks and ten skiers started their race every minute.

It was exciting to see teams prepare for their races. Skis were being waxed and placed at the ready. Competitors could be seen stretching and being given last minute advice by coaches, teammates and parents. Crowds gathered at both sides of the trail with anticipation as the racers skied out of the woods to cross the finish line and along the tracks shouting encouragement as each race started.

Be sure to check our event calendar for the next race scheduled this season. Make plans to come and show your support at the start and finish lines. There are also a number of locations along the course that are great for spectators.
